Workholding and Fixturing Techniques for Productivity Improvement on CNC Machines

Workholding devices and fixtures are used on machines to reduce idle time and thereby reduce cost. Their optimum use not only improves productivity but eliminates quality defects. Often problems related to poor quality and productivity are a direct consequence of poor fixturing in terms of its choice or design. Reduction in set-up change is a challenge most manufacturers face and this is directly related to quality of fixturing.
Recognising this need, Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA) is organising a two day workshop on “Workholding and Fixturing Techniques for Productivity Improvement on CNC Machines” on 29 - 30 April 2011 at Pune.

Reducing Cycle Time & Machining Cost on CNC machining centres

BACKGROUND
Reduction in cycle time & machining cost plays an important role in enhancing productivity especially in large volume production. In the highly competitive market scenario, customers determine the price of a product and entrepreneurs need to continuously fine tune the costs to realize profits. Machine utilization has  a  major  impact  in  reducing  the  manufacturing  cost  of  components.  Most  CNC  machines  are underutilized with only 20% time effectively spent in cutting & the rest in non-value adding operations. 
Although the material cost cannot be reduced, the cycle time & machining cost can be reduced drastically. Reducing cycle time requires eliminating or reducing non-value-added activity. Cycle times are often impacted  due  to  operator  errors,  cutting  parameters,  improper  work  holding,  loading  &  unloading, improper usage of tools & measuring devices and other components needed during the production run.
Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA) is organizing a two day training Programme on

CNC Milling Machine Buying Tips

CNC stand for Computer Numerical Control, and refers specifically to the computer control of machine tools. The main purpose of CNC Milling Machines is to repeatedly manufacture complex parts in metal as well as other materials, using a specially coded program. This specially coded program that is used by CNC Milling machines is written in a notation called G-code. G-codes represent specific CNC Milling functions in alphanumeric format. CNC Milling was developed in the late 1940's and early 1950's by the MIT Servomechanism Laboratory.
1. About CNC
- Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Milling is the most common form of CNC
- CNC mills can perform the functions of drilling and often turning
- CNC Milling machines are classified according to the number of axes that they possess
- Axes are labeled as x and y for horizontal movement, and z for vertical movement
- The evolution of CNC milling machines drastically changed the manufacturing industry
- Curves are as easy to cut as straight lines, complex 3-D structures are relatively easy to produce, and the number of machining steps that required human action is way down.
2. The Fabrication Process
With the use of CNC milling machine the fabrication process of the materials have been trimmed down to just a couple of steps. CNC Milling machines now days are driven directly from computer softwares crated by CAD software packages. With the use CNC Milling machines the assembly of parts can go from brief designs without any intermediate paper drawing works being required. In one sense, with the use of CNC milling machines industrials tasks are done must easier and much faster and the production cost of the company is also lessening out. CNC machines may be said to represent special industrial robot systems, as they are programmable to perform any kind of machining operation, within certain physical limits, like other robotic systems.
3. Buying Tips
Before buying a CNC milling machine it is a must that you should have knowledge about the CNC milling machines basic parts. A CNC milling machine is basically composed of a Safety shield that is usually a clear plastic cover that cover and protects the cutting area. The Tool bit, this part of the CNC milling machines is the one that do the cutting. Spindle Shaft, is the part that holds the tool bit. Spindle Motor, is the part of the CNC milling machine that drives the cutter. The Vertical Column, the part that holds the spindle and all of its part. The Cross Side, a moveable support where the work piece is being cut. The axis motors, which moves the cross side into different axis and the Controller box.
When purchasing your milling machine make sure to check that you have all of this part intact on your CNC milling machine, for if one of this parts is not there it will not surely work or will produce an undesirable end product. Also see to it to check out for safety features, never buy a CNC milling machine without an emergency stop button, this button automatically stops machining when it is pressed. Human, hardware or software errors could mean big losses if the CNC cannot be stopped quickly enough to correct the problem. Also check out the control panel part, it is advisable to buy one with a big control guide sticker so you can clearly see it.
Also check out the screws and tools with long overhangs and adapters, be more observant about cracks and breaks on this CNC milling tools. Make sure that the plastic shield that you are purchasing with your CNC milling machine is made up of high impact polycarbonate plastic. An insert break loose from a 35 mm diameter CNC milling cutter at a spindle speed of 45,000 rpm will be thrown out at a speed of 90 meters per second - equivalent to a bullet that is being shot out of a pistol!

FINISHING SCHOOL IN PRODUCTION ENGINEERING

Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA) - the apex body of the machine tool industry in India - had established a Technology Centre at BIEC, Bangalore with the active support of industries. The objective is to increase competitiveness, enhance efficiency, and improve productivity of machine tool builders and the CNC users across the country, by providing technology inputs and state of the art training. The association has now taken a further step by launching a "Finishing School in Production Engineering". The training will focus on all the practical aspects of modern machining - from reading an Engineering drawing through measurements and quality control - including machining processes, CNC programming and operation, process planning, tool materials, selection of cutting tools and optimising machining parameters, limits,fits and tolerances, GD&T and selection of measuring instruments. In addition to the technical inputs, emphasis would be given to develop soft skills as necessary for manufacturing industries.
The IMTMA newsletter highlighted the following points explaining the rationale behind the Need for Finishing School:  Nearly two lakh engineers and 1.32 lakh diploma holders were unemployed in 2007 - Ministry of Labour and Employment
The biggest concern now is having highly skilled manpower to run the manufacturing sector - National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC)
Manufacturing needs 12 million people and what we have now is just one-tenth of that - Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)
One of the major reasons why engineers, even from reputed institutes, are not easily employed because they lack hands-on skills
The biggest challenge Indian educational system faces today, is employability. The country has the largest pool of educated youth, well educated yet unfortunately unemployable, and
University trained engineers lack the "feel" of how the things are made and how they fit together. They lack shop floor experience, hindering their ability to program CNC machines.
In order to equip the students with practical inputs, hands-on training in production CNC machinery, CAD/CAM systems and other accessories, is made as a part of the curriculum. Industry visits will be organised to get the real life experience of actual production environment.
The Training Methodology incorporates: training in a modern digital factory; class room sessions; measuring practice in instruments and CMM; programming examples and exercises; simulation using SINUTRAIN systems; hands-on training sessions in CNC turning centre, CNC VMC and CAD/CAM programming systems; real time machining of industry level components in CNC machines; and industry visits and project work.
The industry has welcomed the move. "This course will lay a very strong foundation for the young engineers as the training is based on "Learn by doing" method. It will increase the confidence and employability of the fresh engineers to take up challenging jobs in the manufacturing industries, " said Mr T R Parasuraman, Senior Vice President - HR, Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts Private Limited. Adds Mr F R Singhvi, Joint Managing Director, Sansera Engineering Private Limited, "This course will be a good interface between educational institutions and the manufacturing industries. It will help the Engineering student in practically understanding various aspects of machining thereby helping the manufacturing industries in employing engineers who could be useful from day one of joining."
